Mt. Lion Road - Harker Heights, TexasServices:ADA Compliance Bidding Phase Services Construction Documents Construction Observation Construction Staking Design Survey Final Design Inspection Preliminary Engineering The roadway was a two-lane rural section road where two new schools had been constructed along with residential development. The City desired to provide a four-lane collector street to serve the growing population of the area and provide a safe environment in the area of the two schools for the students, many of whom walked to school along this right-of-way each day. Bury conducted a traffic and pedestrian study to determine appropriate controls needed for the coexistence of vehicles and students during the peak rush hours. Through partnering meetings between the school officials, city staff and consultants, Bury gathered input to develop a plan of action to meet the needs of each entity, with the safety of the children paramount. Drainage offered a design challenge for the project. A major drainage way, carrying over 2,000 cfs crossed the roadway. Due to previous development, the undersized culverts created a potential for flooding of the residential structures upstream of the culverts. Utilizing HEC analysis, a study of the drainage basin was made to provide the proper improvements along the channel to provide safe passage of the 100-year storm event without flooding newly constructed residential structures.
